About the Koala

Description:
A stocky body, almost tailless with a round head, large round ears and a smooth black nose. Long front and rear legs with opposed clawed toes for easy climbing. The thick woolly body fur varies in colour from red-brown to silver-grey being lighter on underparts and smelling of a strong eucalyptus oil.

Adult Size:
Overall length 680 - 820mm, weight 5 - 14kgs

Reproduction:
A marsupial having a gestation of 34 - 36 days and a weight at birth of 0.5 - 1.0 gm. The young feed from 1 of 2 nipples in a rear opening pouch for a period of 6 - 12 mths. Sexual maturity is after 2 - 3 years.

Breeding Season:
October to February

Habits:
Spends 15 - 20 hours per day resting in tree forks, feeding usually nocturnally and solitary, only coming to ground to access other feeding trees in home territory. Feeds primarily on eucalyptus leaves and does not drink, receiving moisture only from leaf juice and dew.
